about

"It’s fun to sing one song against another song, to hold tight to the song one is singing, while listening to how the two play off each other’s phrasings and pitches. The song I sing, "Il Ventinove Lulio," is an ancient Italian folk song I grew up with. It refers to a girl born with a rose in her hand in a small pine grove at the edge of the sea. I sing it together with a recording of the Beatles’ "The Fool on The Hill." The first performance of this piece was at New York University’s Loeb Student Center in 1969." —Simone Forti
